What Harm Do Cleaners Do? The Truth behind the Chemicals
Share
You might think that the cleaners you use in your home are perfectly safe for the environment.
However, if you are simply purchasing cleaners from the store and not opting for Earth friendly products, you would be sadly mistaken. Here, I will take a more in-depth look at just what household cleaners do to the environment. And also tell you how you can make a change for the better by switching to Earth friendly products in your home.
Volatile Organic Compounds
Plenty of the cleaners we use on a daily basis contain what the Environmental Protection Agency has termed Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs include things like ammonia, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Floor cleaners, all purpose cleaners, glass cleaners, furniture polish, disinfectants, and dishwasher liquid all contain these chemicals. Studies have shown that VOCs can have serious negative effects on our health, as well as the environmental quality in our homes. Overuse can lead to allergic reactions, various illnesses, respiratory problems, and excessive fumes. On the other hand, organic cleaning products have no VOCs.
The Air We Breathe
I am sure that quite a few of the cleaners you purchase from the store come in spray form. Sprays are easier to apply and simpler to wipe away. But each time you pull the trigger of a spray bottle, some of those molecules from your cleaner are also entering the air. This can be a serious issue when you are cleaning in a closed space or just in your home. One solution to this is to make sure the area you are cleaning is well ventilated. But even opening doors and windows does not eliminate these chemicals. Instead, they just travel outside where they might contribute to larger issues like smog.
The Water We Drink
Even treatment plants cannot filter out VOCs in our waterways. Each time you pour a cleaner down the drain or flush the toilet after cleaning, think of that. These chemicals can lead to rivers and streams that are choked by an overgrowth of plants. Overtime, these plants die. When this happens, oxygen levels in the water are greatly reduced. And this, in turn, can lead to the death of marine life. After this point it is not long until water in a given area cannot be sued for human consumption, and is not safe for even cooking or cleaning.
Changing For the Better
So how can we change this issue? By turning to organic cleaning products, instead. Organic cleaning products like Formula 101 are changing how we view these sorts of products. They can be just as effective as any chemical laden cleaner you might buy from the store. But they are 100% natural and environmentally friendly. This means organic cleaning products pose no risk to wildlife, humans, air quality, or water quality. In fact, Formula 101 is entirely biodegradable and made from plants. It contains absolutely no chemicals and is a fantastic alternative to more harsh cleaners you might be using in your home or workplace.
